The Vitality T20 Blast is always full of excitement, and this match between Leicestershire and Yorkshire at Grace Road was no different. Yorkshire won the toss and their captain decided to bowl first. It looked like a great decision because their bowlers put on a fantastic show right from the start.

Leicestershire had a tough time building big partnerships. They lost wickets at regular intervals, which stopped them from scoring a massive total. By the end of their 20 overs, Leicestershire managed to score 147 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Let us dive into the details of how the first innings played out.

A Shaky Start for Leicestershire

Leicestershire opened their batting with high hopes, but things went wrong almost immediately. In the very first over of the match, they lost their first wicket. Rehan Ahmed was caught by Andrew Tye off the bowling of Hasan Ali for a duck. He only faced two balls before heading back to the pavilion.

After that early blow, Rishi Patel tried to steady the ship. He scored 14 runs off 14 balls, hitting one four and one six. However, he could not stay at the crease for too long. He was dismissed in the sixth over by Moeen Ali, leaving Leicestershire in a spot of bother early in the game.

Nick Kelly and Ben Cox Fight Back

When the team was in trouble, Nick Kelly came to the rescue with a brilliant knock. He played with a lot of confidence and attacked the Yorkshire bowlers. Kelly scored a quick 44 runs off just 31 balls. His entertaining innings included six boundaries and one beautiful six.

At the other end, wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Cox provided great support. Cox stayed until the very end of the innings and remained not out on 33. He faced 24 balls and hit five fours. Together, these two batsmen helped Leicestershire recover from their poor start and gave the team something to fight for.

The Middle-Order Collapse

Just when Leicestershire looked like they were recovering, their middle order collapsed completely. Ashton Turner came to the crease with big expectations but was bowled by Jafer Chohan for a duck. Soon after, James Tattersall was clean-bowled by Faheem Ashraf for 29 runs off 22 balls.

The collapse did not stop there. The captain, Ben Green, could only score 1 run before he was trapped leg-before-wicket (lbw) by Jafer Chohan. In a matter of a few overs, Leicestershire went from a stable position to losing a flurry of wickets, which put them on the back foot again.

The Late Lower-Order Contribution

Towards the end of the innings, Louis Trevaskis tried his best to score some quick runs. He made 13 runs off 15 balls with the help of one six. He tried to clear the boundary again but was caught by Will Luxton off Hasan Ali's bowling.

Ian Holland came next but could not contribute to the scoreboard, getting out for a duck on his second ball. Finally, Josh Davey joined Ben Cox in the final over. Davey scored 3 runs off 3 balls and stayed not out. These small contributions, along with 10 extra runs given by Yorkshire, pushed the total to 147.

Hasan Ali's Magical Bowling Spell

The star of the first innings was undoubtedly Yorkshire’s Pakistan fast bowler, Hasan Ali. He was absolutely brilliant with the ball and completely broke the back of the Leicestershire batting lineup. He bowled his full quota of 4 overs and conceded only 18 runs.

Hasan Ali picked up 4 crucial wickets during his spell, ending with amazing figures of 4 for 18. His economy rate was just 4.50 runs per over, which is incredible in T20 cricket. He took wickets at the start and also came back at the end to clean up the tail.

Support from the Other Bowlers

While Hasan Ali took most of the wickets, the other Yorkshire bowlers kept the pressure on from the other side. Jafer Chohan bowled beautifully as well, taking 2 wickets for 31 runs in his 4 overs. He got the important wickets of Ashton Turner and Ben Green.

Moeen Ali and Faheem Ashraf also bowled smart spells to keep the run rate down. Moeen Ali took 1 wicket for 18 runs in his 3 overs, while Faheem Ashraf took 1 wicket for 29 runs in his 4 overs. Andrew Tye was a bit expensive, giving away 32 runs in his 4 overs without a wicket, but the overall team effort was excellent.

The Final Target for Yorkshire

So, the first innings ended with Leicestershire scoring 147 runs for 8 wickets in their 20 overs. The pitch at Grace Road seems to have something for the bowlers, but 147 is a total that can be chased down if Yorkshire bats sensibly.

Yorkshire will need a good start from their opening batsmen to make this chase easy. On the other hand, Leicestershire will need early wickets, just like Yorkshire got, if they want to defend this total and win the match. It sets up the game perfectly for an exciting second half.

What do you think?

Do you think 147 runs is enough for Leicestershire to defend on this pitch, or will Yorkshire chase it down easily? Who was your favorite player in the first innings? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
