India completely took control of the game on Day 2 of the ongoing one-off Test match. After putting up a massive total on the scoreboard, the Indian bowlers came out firing and left the opposition struggling by the time stumps were called. It was a day filled with top-class batting, brilliant partnerships, and a stellar bowling performance that put India in the driver's seat.
On the other side, Afghanistan had a very tough time keeping up with the pressure. Their bowlers leaked a lot of runs in the first half of the day, and their batters could not handle the spin wizardry of the Indian bowlers later in the evening. With three days still left in the match, they have a mountain to climb if they want to save this game.
India's Powerful First Innings Total
India declared their first innings after scoring a humongous 564 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. They batted for 127 overs, showing great patience and intent. The pitch seemed great for batting, and the Indian players made sure they capitalized on the conditions to put their team in a virtually unloseable position.
The team management decided to declare the innings as soon as they felt they had enough runs to put psychological pressure on the opposition. It wasn't just a two-man show for India, as the other top-order batters also made significant impacts. Sai Sudharsan played a very fluent knock of 81 runs off 104 balls, smashing 13 boundaries. He set a great platform early on, proving why he is considered one of the brightest young talents in the country.
Rishabh Pant also entertained the crowd with a quick-fire 81 runs off 121 balls, which included 6 fours and 3 massive sixes. Pant played his natural aggressive game, shifting the momentum completely and forcing the opposition captain to spread the field. His knock ensured that India kept scoring at a very brisk rate.
Lower Order Adds Quick Runs Before Declaration
Even after the main batters got out, India's lower order did not let the intensity drop. Washington Sundar played a very mature unbeaten knock of 52 runs to guide the tail. He looked very comfortable against both pace and spin, ensuring India crossed the 550-run mark easily.
Handy contributions also came from Manav Suthar, who scored 28, and Mohammed Siraj, who played a cameo of 22 runs off just 12 balls with a strike rate of over 183. These extra runs towards the end frustrated the bowlers even more and pushed the total well beyond Afghanistan's comfort zone.
Mohammad Saleem's Historic Six-Wicket Haul
Despite India scoring heavily, Afghan fast bowler Mohammad Saleem had a day to remember personally. He was the only bowler who looked consistently dangerous and finished with incredible figures of 6 wickets for 140 runs in his 27 overs. Saleem bowled his heart out on a pitch that did not offer much help to the pacers.
He picked up crucial wickets, including those of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, and Dhruv Jurel. Saleem’s regular breakthroughs prevented India from reaching an even bigger total, making him the lone shining star in an otherwise tough bowling performance for his country.
Afghanistan's Top Order Crumbles Early
Chasing India's massive total, Afghanistan needed a solid start but unfortunately got the exact opposite. Openers Abdul Malik and Sediqullah Atal could not survive the initial pressure created by the Indian new-ball bowlers. Malik was dismissed for 16 by Manav Suthar, while Atal was clean-bowled by Prasidh Krishna for 17.
Things got worse when the dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed for just 12 runs after facing 40 balls. The top order looked hurried and struggled to adapt to the disciplined line and length maintained by the Indian bowling attack, leaving their team in a big hole early on.
Manav Suthar Spins a Web
Young Indian spinner Manav Suthar was the absolute star with the ball during the evening session. He bowled with incredible control and variation, making life miserable for the batsmen. Suthar bowled 15.5 overs, gave away just 21 runs, and picked up 3 crucial wickets at a mind-boggling economy rate of 1.33.
He picked up the wickets of Abdul Malik, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Afsar Zazai. Suthar's ability to bowl continuous maiden overs (7 in total) built up massive pressure, forcing the batsmen to make mistakes. He looks poised to pick up more wickets when play resumes on Day 3.
Rahmat Shah Stands Firm Amidst the Ruins
Amidst all the falling wickets, experienced batter Rahmat Shah showed immense grit and technique. He remained unbeaten on 43 runs off 81 balls by the time stumps were drawn. Rahmat hit 6 fours and a six, looking like the only batsman who figured out how to tackle the Indian spin challenge.
He found a little bit of support from captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, who made 20 runs before being trapped leg-before-wicket by Prasidh Krishna. Rahmat will have to play a heroic innings on Day 3 if his team wants to avoid a massive defeat or a potential follow-on.
The Current Match Situation at Stumps
At the end of Day 2, Afghanistan's scoreboard reads a disappointing 113 runs for the loss of 5 wickets after 39.5 overs. The final wicket of Afsar Zazai fell on the very last ball of the day, giving India the perfect ending to a highly successful day of Test cricket.
As things stand right now, Afghanistan still trails India by a massive 451 runs in the first innings. With only 5 wickets remaining and the pitch expected to turn even more, India is clearly in a dominant position to wrap up this Test match quickly.
