IND vs AFG Test Day 1: Shubman Gill and KL Rahul Dominate Afghanistan with Majestic Hundreds

The One-off Test match between India and Afghanistan kicked off with a massive statement of intent from the Indian batting lineup. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, India capitalized on excellent batting conditions. They played beautiful cricket throughout the day to finish Day 1 at a commanding 368 for 3 after 85 overs.

With two batsmen scoring brilliant centuries and another couple making vital contributions, India has firmly put Afghanistan on the back foot. The pitch looked great for batting, and the Indian top-order made full use of it. Let’s break down how the exciting action unfolded on the opening day.

The Opening Exchange: Jaiswal Falls Early

India started their innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal and the experienced KL Rahul opening the batting. While the pitch looked perfect for batting, Afghanistan's pace bowlers tried their best to find some early swing and trouble the batters. Jaiswal looked highly aggressive right from the first over, trying to put pressure on the opposition.

He quickly moved to 24 runs off just 32 balls, hitting 5 elegant boundaries in the process. However, his dangerous stay at the crease was cut short in the 12th over. Right-arm fast bowler Mohammad Saleem got the first breakthrough for Afghanistan, forcing an edge from Jaiswal which was cleanly taken by the keeper. India lost their first wicket at 41 runs.

The Big Partnerships: Sudharsan and Rahul Steady the Ship

After Jaiswal’s dismissal, Sai Sudharsan joined KL Rahul in the middle, and the duo handled the Afghanistan bowling attack with great maturity. Instead of playing risky shots, they focused on rotating the strike and building a solid foundation for the team.

Sai Sudharsan played a fantastic knock, scoring 81 runs off 104 balls with 13 beautiful boundaries. He looked set for a well-deserved century, but Mohammad Saleem struck again to dismiss him. Sudharsan and Rahul put together a brilliant 139-run partnership for the second wicket, leaving India in a very strong position at 180 for 2.

KL Rahul’s Gritty Century Highlights the Middle Session

KL Rahul continued his superb form and anchored the innings from one end with immense patience. He showed great discipline against both pace and spin, ensuring Afghanistan could not make a comeback into the game. He reached a magnificent milestone by scoring 100 runs off 165 balls, including 11 boundaries.

His wonderful innings was a masterclass in how to pace a Test match layout. After completing his hard-earned century, Rahul finally fell to spinner Ziaur Rahman, caught by Rahmanullah Gurbaz. His dismissal left the score at 247 for 3, bringing an end to a fantastic top-order display.

Gill and Pant Take Over Before Stumps

If Afghanistan thought they could crawl back into the game after getting Rahul out, they were in for a tough time. Captain Shubman Gill and explosive wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant joined forces in the final session. Together, they completely took the game away from the visitors before the end of the day.

Shubman Gill led from the front with a flawless captain's performance, mixing caution with brilliant stroke play. By the time the umpires called for Stumps, Gill remained unbeaten on 103 runs off 143 balls, decorated with 11 fours and a massive six. It was a proud moment for the young captain.

Rishabh Pant’s Quickfire Fifty Adds Late Fireworks

At the other end, Rishabh Pant did exactly what he is famous for—putting the pressure right back on the bowling side. He scored a rapid 50 not out off just 70 balls, keeping the crowd fully entertained. Pant brought his signature attacking style to the game, smashing 2 fours and 3 huge sixes.

The unbroken partnership between Gill and Pant currently stands at 121 runs. Their aggressive batting in the final hour ensured India finished the day with a very high run-rate. Afghanistan's players looked completely exhausted as they walked off the field.

How the Afghanistan Bowlers Fared on a Tough Day

It was a long and tiring day in the field for the Afghanistan bowling attack. On a pitch that offered almost no assistance, the bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs. Mohammad Saleem was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2 crucial wickets for 67 runs in his 13 overs.

Ziaur Rahman picked up the other prize wicket of KL Rahul, giving away 61 runs in his 15 overs. The spinners had a very tough time, especially Nangeyalia Kharote, who conceded 95 runs in his 20 overs without any success. Even captain Hashmatullah Shahidi had to bowl 17 overs to help his struggling side.

What to Expect on Day 2 of the Test Match

India is currently in a massive position of absolute strength. With a total of 368/3 and power-hitters like Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar still yet to bat, India will look to cross the 500-run mark on Day 2 before thinking about declaring their innings.

For Afghanistan, the morning plan will be very simple but highly challenging. They must try to get early wickets, break the dangerous Gill-Pant partnership, and wrap up the Indian batting line-up as quickly as possible. It is going to be a crucial first session tomorrow morning.

Over to You!

It was an incredible first day of Test cricket, and Indian fans have every reason to celebrate. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill definitely stole the show with their amazing centuries today.

What do you think? How many total runs will India score in their first innings before declaring? And can the Afghanistan bowlers make a strong comeback tomorrow morning?
