IPL 2026: Ishan Kishan and Klaasen Destroy CSK Bowling as SRH Secure a Dominant 5-Wicket Victory

An Ishan Kishan representing Sunrisers Hyderabad celebrates reaching his half-century by raising his cricket bat against Chennai Super Kings at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

The Indian League witnessed another high-octane clash as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured a brilliant 5-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Chasing a competitive target of 181 runs on a batting-friendly surface, Pat Cummins and his men displayed absolute dominance in all departments. They wrapped up the run chase in just 19 overs with 6 balls to spare, proving why they are considered one of the most destructive batting lineups in the tournament this season. With this sensational victory, SRH has moved up the points table, while Ruturaj Gaikwad’s CSK will need to urgently address their bowling discipline before heading into their next encounter.

CSK First Innings: Explosive Start and Middle-Order Resistance

After losing the toss and being put into bat first, Chennai Super Kings opened their innings with great intent but struggled with consistency. The explosive wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson looked in magnificent touch right from the first ball. He played a brilliant, high-tempo cameo, smashing 27 runs off just 13 deliveries. His aggressive knock was decorated with 5 classic boundaries and 1 towering six, operating at a strike rate of over 207. However, his dangerous stay at the crease was cut short in the third over when he was caught by Ishan Kishan off the bowling of Pat Cummins.

Following Samson's dismissal, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad tried to anchor the innings from one end. Unfortunately, he found it difficult to time the ball perfectly against a disciplined SRH pace attack. Gaikwad scored a sluggish 15 runs off 21 balls before mistiming a delivery straight to Eshan Malinga off Pat Cummins' bowling. Urvil Patel also chipped in with a quick 13 off 8 balls, hitting 2 big sixes before being cleaned up by Sakib Hussain.

The rebuilding phase for Chennai was carried out by K. Sharma and the young Proteas talent, Dewald Brevis. K. Sharma played a vital, aggressive knock in the middle overs, scoring 32 runs from just 19 balls, which included 3 fours and 2 massive sixes. He provided the necessary stability before being dismissed by Cummins. On the other hand, Dewald Brevis turned out to be the top scorer for Chennai Super Kings. Brevis played an exceptional innings of 44 runs off 27 deliveries, dismantling the spinners and striking 2 fours and 4 huge sixes. Shivam Dube provided the late flourish to the innings, scoring a calculated 26 runs off 23 balls with 3 fours and a six. P. Veer added a quick 11 off 9 balls at the death, while Akeal Hosein remained unbeaten on 3 runs. Thanks to these crucial contributions, CSK finished their quota of 20 overs with a fighting total of 180/7.

Pat Cummins Leads the Bowling Masterclass for SRH

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowling department put up a highly disciplined performance to restrict a powerful CSK batting lineup on a flat track. The captain, Pat Cummins, led from the front and delivered a match-defining spell. Cummins used his variations and experience perfectly, finishing with magnificent figures of 3 wickets for 28 runs in his 4 overs. He took the massive wickets of Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and K. Sharma, breaking the backbone of Chennai's batting order.

Young domestic speedster Sakib Hussain also stepped up on the big stage, picking up 2 crucial wickets for 34 runs in his 4 overs, including the big wicket of Shivam Dube. The Sri Lankan bowling sensation, Eshan Malinga, was incredibly economical, building immense pressure on the CSK batsmen by conceding just 26 runs in his 4 overs while taking 1 wicket. Praful Hinge also bowled well under pressure to pick up 1 wicket for 37 runs in his 3 overs. Shivang Kumar bowled a tidy spell of 3 overs for 20 runs, keeping things quiet during the middle overs, while Nitish Kumar Reddy had an expensive day, conceding 35 runs in his 2 overs.

The Chase: Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen Destroy CSK Bowling Attack

Chasing a target of 181 runs required a strong and stable start, but SRH suffered an early setback. The dangerous Australian opener, Travis Head, was dismissed early in the chase for just 6 runs off 6 balls, caught and bowled by Mukesh Choudhary in the third over. Abhishek Sharma looked promising and played some exquisite shots, scoring a quickfire 26 runs off 21 deliveries with 3 boundaries and a six, before falling to Akeal Hosein’s spin in the 8th over. With the score at 56/2, Chennai thought they were back in the game.

However, what followed next was absolute carnage. Ishan Kishan was joined by the destructive South African middle-order batsman, Heinrich Klaasen, and the duo completely took the game away from the opposition. Ishan Kishan played a masterclass of an innings, balancing caution with extreme aggression. He targeted the pace bowlers and anchored the run chase beautifully. Kishan played a match-winning knock of 70 runs off 47 balls, smashing 7 spectacular boundaries and 3 towering sixes.

At the other end, Heinrich Klaasen was in no mood to defend. He took immediate control of the match and launched an all-out assault on the CSK spin department. Klaasen hammered an explosive 47 runs off just 26 deliveries at a sensational strike rate of 180.77. His entertaining innings was laced with 6 fours and 2 massive sixes over the mid-wicket boundary. The partnership between Kishan and Klaasen completely deflated the Chennai bowling attack and brought the required run rate down drastically.

Late Drama as SRH Seals a Comprehensive Victory

Just when it looked like SRH would cruise to victory without any further hiccups, CSK made a brief comeback. Heinrich Klaasen was stumped by Sanju Samson off the bowling of Noor Ahmad in the 15th over. Nitish Kumar Reddy came in and scored a quick 11 runs off 7 balls before being dismissed by Mukesh Choudhary. Soon after, the well-settled Ishan Kishan also departed in the 19th over, caught by Urvil Patel off Anshul Kamboj after scoring a magnificent 70.

Despite losing these wickets in quick succession, the equation was well within control. S. Arora came out with positive intent and finished the match in style. He smashed an unbeaten 10 runs off just 5 balls, including a massive six. S. Ravichandran also remained not out on 5 runs off 2 balls, hitting a crucial four to cross the line. SRH reached 181/5 in exactly 19 overs, completing a clinical 5-wicket win.

For Chennai Super Kings, Mukesh Choudhary was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with decent figures of 2 wickets for 36 runs in his 4 overs. Akeal Hosein bowled a highly economical spell, taking 1/21 in his 3 overs. Noor Ahmad picked up 1/40, while Anshul Kamboj was highly expensive, conceding 46 runs in his 4 overs for just 1 wicket. Spencer Johnson also went wicketless, giving away 26 runs in his 3 overs.
